Harvest journal: it’s as big as my head!

September 02, 2025 by Virginia Villa

This tomato weighed in at 1 kilogram.

Not to be outdone, Michael dug a potato weighing in at 3 pounds, 2 ounces.

This time of year, all the nightshades begin to cascade. These are the ripe tomatoes from one plant.

One red potato plant produced 26.5 pounds of potatoes.

Michael figures the potatoes loved having the nutrients from last winter’s deer pyre.

These are the tomatoes I picked this morning.

We ate two for breakfast.

6.5 pounds of cherry tomatoes got roasted and then stewed with onions, garlic, thyme, basil, capers, red pepper flakes, really good olive oil, salt and pepper to make 4.5 pints of pasta sauce. Processed in a water bath, they will brighten a winter day.

9 pounds of tomatoes made 5 pints of tomato jam. No pectin in this recipe, just a really long boil until the tomato-jalapeño-sugar mix reached 220° F.

This is how many tomatoes we have left at the end of the day. Tomorrow threatens rain again, which gives us inside time for canning. We also will need to add yeast to our pear juice so the hard cider process can begin. I’ve been drinking the leftover pear juice straight. Ahhhhh. Now it is time for a shower and bed.
